As I've never been to New York myself the only way i was going to create a image in my head was to look at photography of the New York streets. One of the main things about Film Noir is the vintage glamour and style so i felt it wouldn't be relevant to look at New York's modern day streets i needed to go back in time and see what was about in the 1940's to 1950's.When researching into NYC i stumbled across a website called www.forgotten-ny.com which has a variety of photos from different NYC streets in 1939 they are seen above. These photos are perfect for my research as they are full of detail and give me an insight to what it was like. The objects that are seen in every photo are fire escapes, street lighting with signs saying the streets names, shops and shop signs, basic advertising(coca cola), news stands, fire hydrants and metal dustbins. All these are objects that i feel if used in my set it would create the understanding between stage and audience I'm looking for.
